Most Indonesians doesn't have surnames. I used to think this as a flaw, but now I see it as a part of our culture. Of course, there are some exception, as some Javanesse, Manado, Sundanesse, Ambonesse, Bataks (Mandailing, Toba, and well...all of them), etc, have 'em. Let's explore how our sisters and brothers relate themselves.

Tell me the Indonesian Surnames that you know, whether it is yours or your friends' or your enemies', it doesn't matter! Please give the details of the ethnicity, the lineal system, and the meaning or history or background of it, if you can.

Batak Surnames (Patrilineal):
-Pasaribu
-Sianturi
-Sitinjak
-Simanjuntak
-Sinaga

Need more! And need help on the sub-ethnic too. I don't know whether they are from Batak Mandailing, Toba, Simalungun or other.

Dayak Surnames (Patrilineal):
-Dau (Remember Sheren Regina Dau?)
-Atunarang

Javanesse Surnames:
-Sastrowardoyo (Dian Pramitha Sastrowardoyo!hehehe)

Manado Surnames:
-Sasuit
-Maramis

I've lived in Indonesia almost my whole life
the only people that don't have any surnames are either old or just came from a really, really remote place
nowadays, everyone has their own surenames

now if you want to know, there's millions kinds of surnames, I can't tell you each and every one of it
but here's something :
besides the originale Indonesian people, there are a lot of Chinesse immigrants since the beginning of 20th century. and since the regime of Soeharto (yes, he only has 1 name), the Chinesse are ought to Indonesianized their family name. Now you can predict the original Chinesse family name from their Indonesian one 'cause it's not far difference.

example :
Indonesian ----- Chinesse
Halim -----------Lim
Salim------------Lim
Sukandar -------Su
Tendean---------Tan

and so on

I actually know this post, this is from asian fi nest. Babycurious is right about Chinese Indonesian surnames, but it is true that surnames in Indonesia depends on his/her ethnicity. Those ethnicities listed above are famous for their patrilineal surnames, but there's also matrilineal ones like, and the rest of Indonesians don't even have any.

usually... a real indonesian has sur-name.. but not like me (born in Indonesia but consider as foreigner "WNA" ) ( i have chinese family trees ) so.... basically indonesian can be divided into 2 groups which are WNI(native) and WNA(foreigner/ not purely indonesian.. or has chinese face etc ).. kind of weird.... but that's how it works... !!! people like me.... usually has chinese surname... not indonesian surname...
