In the old days, when a man wants to court a chic, he'd ask her father's permission to 'come up' meaning to come up their stairs at some given evening and talk to her and her parents in the living room...to court her in supervision. to make good impressions. then after a while if he's really into her, he'd bring along a buddy or buddies (one to play guitar for and one to sing for in behalf) at night to serenade her below her window. or even tell her poems. the songs and poems usually have a certain i don't know to say it, 'beat' or rhytm filipino style. what he's trying to gain is the 'matamis na oo' or "the sweet yes". yes means "yes i will date you exclusively" or back in the day, "yes i will marry you".

I know filipinos here who love the karaoke! They do that like every time they get a chance... to grab the microphone and sing their gullets out... they love singing!! They are pretty good at it... so these folks are considered FOBs in the States??

Dang... u guyz are so damn self-conscious abt image huh?

No no. Singing karaoke doesn't make one a fob. But taking a girl on a romantic date to karaoke IS. Yes we love singing. You know how embarassing it was going shopping with my parents and they'd be singing in the middle of the whole thing. Sometimes we're like just sitting there in the airport and my dad would bust out the Eagles.

Self concious, everybody is self concious. Filipinos just dress good. Haha.

flip was just joking. notice the jk, at the end. yep we love to sing karaoke, a filipino owns the patent to it so we try to increase his royalties. :10900: it's not just limited to karaoke though, even without karaoke someone will usually initiate singing be it with guitar or keyboards. guitar is the common instrument though since keyboards and piano are a bit expensive. those who say its fob probably are those who can't sing. joke!

about dating, i've only dated filipinas since i grew up here in pilipinas. though, i'd love to date a non-pinay bella senorita if ever i'd be attracted to one.

serenade or harana is very rare now but music still plays a big role for courtship especially among the teen-agers. filipino teens can be so cheesily romantic. they do mix tapes, dedicate songs for their crushes through fm radio or music tv and now they do it with youtube. a postmodern serenade, but i'd go for the old style if i were them. :10600:
