i just recently found out that the chinese name for the mekong river is lancang, the c is like tz. the chinese got the name from the local dai(tai-lu) who call the river as that. lancang is lan xang, the name of the first and the strongest lao kingdom. could it be that the original name of the river is lanxang? this is quite interesting...

Wow. I never knew that. But it seems right being that the ancestors of modern-day Laotian people originated in China.
